Cambridge City Women’s 1s vs Wimbledon Women’s 2s

Saturday 18th February 2023

Vitality Women’s Division 1 South

Umpires: Zoe Hall & Mark Jarvis; Match Official: Ali Tompkins

Welcome to the Olympic Dave Arena!

Today we host Wimbledon 2nd XI in what we hope will be an entertaining game. Last week our women had a battling draw away to Sevenoaks who are second in the league. By all accounts Charlotte Rye had another storming game and deservedly won Player of the Match but there were a number in contention - testament to the team pulling together.

Well done to two of our current members and commiserations to a CCHC Old Girl. This past Sunday the Oxford v Cambridge Varsity game took place. We are delighted for our clubhouse mates, Cambridge, who won the men’s game on shuttles and the women’s game 1-0. Our very own Kat Petch scored the decisive goal, showing her experience and composure with a quick self-pass and reverse stick finish. The team are ably coached by Men’s 1st XI player Adam Price while Oxford fielded Rosie Chen who is out on loan for a few years while she completes her studies.

Last weekend also saw a good win for the women’s 2s, great to see the goals spread around with May picking up a hat trick, Emma again popping a few in and Ella also getting involved. Another highlight was the Men’s 6s 7-0 win with even more goal scorers! Congratulations also to the Men’s Veterans who had a positive result in what has been a difficult season for them. I was really pleased to see Barnaby made his debut for the 3rd XI, he works hard each and every week at training, attends summer hockey sessions and observes other players to improve his game.

Midweek, in rancid weather, Laurel and I umpired the Women’s 3rd XI in a great game against Wisbech Town. Despite a 5-0 win it wasn't always comfortable and Wisbech had some very strong players of their own. However, the mixture of youth and experience really did tell, with Millie and Ciara creating two marvellous goals, Chanre being tenacious as ever and Hannah timing a run to perfection. One thing I will add is my first ever telling off by Laura, for awarding a penalty corner against her, was terrifying! If we can go another 10-15 years before the next telling off that would be great!

This Sunday our Women’s 2nd XI host St Albans 2nd XI at 13:45, then on Tuesday the Men’s 1st XI will host Belper at 19:45. Please do get down to support if you can!

Our umpires today are Zoë Hall and Mark Jarvis and our Match Official is Ali Tompkins. Last summer Zoë took part in some of the EuroHockey events, so I hope that there is more to come for this talented young woman! Thank you to all three for taking the time to support the game and ensure we can play.
